Occupational Therapy

Our team of Occupational Therapists (OT’s) specialise in children with physical and social/emotional difficulties. OT’s look at the occupations or activities that children perform including:

Self-care skills

such as toileting, dressing, eating, bathing/showering.

Play and social development

Social and emotional development assists children with pretend play, turn taking, cooperative play with other children, and their participation in group leisure/sport activities.

Skills for kinder or school

  • Fine motor skill development (writing, drawing, cutting),
  • gross motor development (climbing, riding a bike, access to playground equipment)
  • visual motor/perceptual skills (orienting self in space, judging distances, following lines when reading)
  • Building skills for the classroom (listening and following instructions, concentration, organising their school belongings)

Assessments

Assessments may be recommended by an external professional such as a Paediatrician or your child’s school. You may request a formal assessment or your therapist may recommend one for either funding and/or therapeutic purposes. Please feel free to discuss formal assessments, procedures, costs and benefits with your therapist at any point.

Who would benefit from OT?

Occupational Therapy is a health profession providing support, advice and intervention for children experiencing difficulties completing everyday tasks. It may include working with children with or without disabilities in some of the following areas:

  • Handwriting and fine motor skill difficulties
  • Emotional Regulation
  • Learning / attention difficulties
  • Planning and organisational difficulties
  • Social and behavioural difficulties
  • Self care difficulties

Services available

  • Individual therapy sessions in your home, school, kindergarten, child care centre or community location.
  • Assessment of your child’s development and skills using informal and/or formal standardised assessments e.g. fine motor skills, handwriting, sensory processing or play skills.
  • Reports and recommendations for other professionals working with your child (e.g. the classroom teacher) and funding applications.
